Officially opened in late 1997, the Ecole de la Deuxième Chance (Second Chance School) in Marseille was the first school of its kind in Europe. Its role is to use education to help young adults (aged 18-25) to integrate society and working life after being out of mainstream education without obtaining any qualifications for at least a year. Each year, more than 600 young people, on average, enrol in the work-study programme provided at the School.
Each student receives full individual help from professionals, teachers and social service workers:
-> E2C works closely with companies (at the beginning of 2013, the school boasted over 2,700 companies, groups of companies and associations as partners): the E2C staff in the company relations department work directly with the companies to guide the students in building their career path.
-> On an academic level, the School gives remedial classes in all the basic skills: literacy, numeracy, logical thinking and computer skills. In the work-study programme, teaching is completely individual and tailored to the actual level of the students when they are admitted to the school.
-> In partnership with the associations in the greater Marseille area, E2C also works to help students with other problems they might encounter, concerning accommodation, health matters, difficult family relations, access to their rights, etc.
